Top 10 Pinterest Alternatives For Marketers

With more than 16 million unique visitors in March 2012, pinterest is currently one of the most popular social media sites on the Web. and just like all successful startups, the social pinboarding site has inspired many copycats that range in topics from retail to design to . . . men.

These niche sites can be utilized by Web marketers looking for specific audiences to which they can target their strategies, or by designers simply looking for inspiration. What follows are some of the Pinterest clones that have arrived on the scene in recent months, as well as one or two similar sites that have been around even longer than Pinterest.

SparkRebel
SparkRebel is a fashion-inspired discovery and social shopping destination that is currently in Beta. The fashion and beauty focused site contains 19 categories for users to browse. SparkRebel also features brand pages that allow vendors to curate and share products and content with members. The site includes prices and a “buy it” icon on content pages that redirects consumers to a separate site in order to finish the purchase.

Stylepin
This site allows users to collect and organize images for fashion and style inspiration. Stylepin is targeted only for fashion and style, so no pictures of dogs and random quotes allowed. It includes a print generator that enables users to select photos from their pins and turn them into PDF, DOC or ZIP fi les that can be printed. Users must request an invite to use Stylepin.

Dribbble
This niche site caters to a community of designers by enabling users to display small screenshots of their work. The site also enables members of the community to provide feedback to one another, and allows users to gain inspiration by browsing through images categorized by colors and popular tags such as logo, website, app and button.

Image Spark
This site lets users collect, discover, share, tag and converge images that inspire them towards creative designs. Users can create moodboards that enable them to set a visual tone for their images. Users also have the option to keep their images private so that others do not have access to their projects and ideas. Image Spark is free to use and provides users with 1GB of storage and two moodboards.

Design:Related
This site was founded in 2006 and is more of an online portfolio for design professionals than a social pinboarding site. Users must request an invite to join the community, where they can upload images into portfolios, post inspirational content, search for jobs and browse through other users’ content. It is kind of like a combination of Pinterest and LinkedIn for designers.

Manteresting
While many have claimed that Pinterest is geared towards women, there is no denying that Manteresting is not. Instead of pinning content, Manteresting users nail their content to profiles in categories called “workbenches.” Currently, Manteresting is in Beta, but invites are not required. Instead, users can sign up through Twitter, Facebook or email.

Gentlemint
This is another male-focused bookmarking website that is very similar to Pinterest in its look and feel. The site is currently open by invitation only, and according to the American Moustache Institute, Gentlemint is “one of the more manly websites on the planet.”

Fancy
Instead of pinning photos, users of this site “Fancy” their content. Users browse through fancied content and search for product deals to make purchases directly on the site. It seems like an especially good Pinterest alternative for retailers.

Juxtapost
This postboard site allows users to sign up without invitations, provides the option to keep postboards private and share them privately, export content to an Excel spreadsheet, index photos by colors and find similar content through a “more like this” button. Juxtapost includes 18 different categories for users to explore, and it may be one of the best Pinterest alternatives out there.

Visualize.us
This bookmarking site also allows users to sign up without an invitation and it makes bookmarking easy by providing an extension for Firefox or buttons for other browsers. The main page displays a list of popular tags so that users can quickly find the type of content they are looking for, from typography to landscapes. VisualizeUs provides users with numerous tags and images to browse through and discover.

Holga iPhone Lens Filter Kit

A simple, cheap way to give photos from your iPhone camera a little something extra

The old saying goes that the best camera is the one you have with you, and for a good percentage of the time, this will be the inbuilt camera on your iPhone. Keen to tap into that sitting market, several accessories that pimp up the camera have begun to appear, with the Holga lens attempting to tap into the dual popularity of iPhone and all things vintage.
Equipped with nine different filters on a rotating wheel attached to a case that fits around the iPhone 4/4S, it features a number of coloured filters, a macro filter and a few others that provide a split screen effect. It's easy to flick through them, and it provides a fun way to experiment.
It's difficult to imagine yourself using all of the filters regularly, especially the split screen ones, but some are a bit of fun - like the red, heart-shaped filter - while the macro lens is actually surprisingly decent and useful.
On the downside, the case stops the iPhone being sleekly pocketable, and it's worth noting that it also rather annoyingly covers the flash, so it's best suited to using in well-lit situations. If kooky effects are your bag, you could perhaps try combining the kit with apps such as Hipstamatic or Ins tag ram.
Ultimately, this isn't the most sophisticated piece of kit you can attach to your iPhone, but at under £20 it's fun and worth a punt.

Kensington SecureBack Security Case For iPad

Give potential thieves a harder task of walking off with your iPad with Kensington SecureBack Security Case.

Manufacturer: Kensington Websitekensington.com
Then using your iPad in a business where people come and go, leaving it lying around can be nerve-racking. Unlike many notebooks, there's no slot in the iPad's body to attach a security lock. The SecureBack is designed to remedy that. It comprises three pieces. The two larger ones slide together on the iPad's back, then a long piece slides into the raised area where they meet. The whole thing is only robustly held together when you attach a Kensington Click safe lock to the hole on the top edge, which you can them attach to something.
While the case feels firmly secured, it has some clear drawbacks. The lock attaches at the top of the case, altering the iPad's weight distribution. The bottom edge would have been a better position.
Another little niggle is that the strip securing the pieces in place is positioned off-centre, and the fingers of your right hand will inevitably lie across it. It protrudes by just enough to notice (and be distracted by) its shape. A curved surface might have been a better option, even though the case is intended to protect iPads that aren't constantly in hand.

Verdict:
"Reassuring security against light-fingered opportunists. Don't forget the cost of a ClickSafe lock."

How To Install Windows 8 Consumer Preview

Get Hands-On With The Next Version Of Windows

If you’re the type of person who likes to test drive several models before you settle on a new car or walk around the store wearing a new pair of shoes before you decide to buy, then you probably want to see what Windows 8 will be like before you install it. Well, you’re in luck. The Windows 8 CP (Consumer Preview) is Microsoft’s way of giving us a taste of what’s to come in the retail version of Windows 8. (At press time, Microsoft announced that the Windows 8 Release Preview— formerly known as the Release Candidate—would be available the first week of June; the Release Preview is typically the last test version before the retail version is released.) Read on for our step-by-step instructions on how to download and install the Windows 8 CP.

Step 1
The first step in getting an early look at Windows 8 is to visit Microsoft’s download site
Click the Get It Now button and then click the Download Windows 8 Consumer Preview button on the following page. (If you’d like, you can input your email address and region and click the privacy terms agreement checkbox to subscribe to Microsoft’s Windows 8-specific newsletter.)

Step 2
When the installer finishes downloading, launch it and click Run when you see the Open File Security Warning. The software proceeds to check your computer’s compatibility with the Windows 8 CP and displays a report of the number of installed programs that will work fine and the number that won’t.

Microsoft gives you three options for where and when to install the Windows 8 Consumer Preview.
Unless you’re overwriting your current Windows installation, we recommend burning an ISO or installing using a flash drive.

Step 3
To view the report, click See The Compatibility Report and take note of any items in the Need Your Attention category. These applications won’t work natively in the Windows 8 CP. You may have to reinstall these applications after the Windows 8 setup completes or find versions that support Windows 8. In our test, the only application that was a problem was the software that accompanies our AMD Radeon HD graphics card, but AMD offers a Windows 8 CP-compatible version of the driver. To print or save this page for later reference, click the appropriate buttons at the bottom of the screen. Click Close when you’re ready to proceed and then click Next in the
setup wizard.

Step 4
When you see the Windows 8 CP product key, write it down and then click Next to initiate the download. When the download completes, the utility will spend a few moments checking the download and getting files ready.
The procedure for changing your PC’s boot sequence in the BIOS Setup Utility will vary among PCs.

Step 5
Next, you’ll see a screen that gives you the option to Install Now, Install On Another Partition, or Install Later.
Click the radio button for your preferred option and then click Next. For the remainder of this tutorial, we’ll follow the Install On Another Partition procedure. This way, you don’t risk overwriting your current Windows with one that will expire shortly. If you select Install Later, the setup wizard will close. You can relaunch it anytime by double-clicking the Install Windows shortcut on your Desktop.

Step 6
To install the Windows 8 CP on another partition, you’ll need to burn the ISO (International Organization for Standardization) file to a DVD or use a USB flash drive that is 3GB or larger. Click the radio button adjacent to the option you want and then click Next. We chose to use a flash drive, so the rest of this tutorial will follow that procedure.

Step 7
Plug a 3GB or larger USB flash drive into an available USB port and the setup wizard will detect it. If more than one flash drive is detected, make sure you click the appropriate one and then click Next. A pop-up dialog box will warn you that all data on the flash drive will be deleted if you proceed. Click Yes to continue.
The setup wizard will then create a bootable USB Flash drive that will install the Windows 8 CP on your PC. Once complete, you’ll get another glimpse of the product key.
Make sure you type the Windows product key correctly to proceed with your installation.

You may want to unplug the hard drive or SSD (solid-state-drive) that houses your current Windows installation to prevent an accidental deletion.

The process of copying and expanding files, and installing features and updates may take some time.

Step 8
Now, restart your PC and get ready to access your BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) Setup Menu by pressing the designated key during boot. The navigation and option titles in the BIOS Setup Utility differ greatly among PCs, so the following steps will also vary. Pressing DELETE, F1, or F2 will typically get you into the BIOS, but the correct keystroke will often appear on-screen during boot. Once in the BIOS Setup Utility, you need to make the USB flash drive your first boot device, so look for a menu option such as Boot Sequence, Boot Priority, or Boot Menu. Frequently, the BIOS Setup Utility displays how to change the boot priority once you’ve accessed the correct menu; common ways to change boot sequence include highlighting the USB flash drive option and pressing the Plus key (+) or PAGE UP key to move it to the top of the list. Save changes and reset, typically by pressing F12.

Step 9
As the system boots from the USB flash drive, the Windows 8 beta fish logo appears on-screen followed by the Windows Setup language and locale options screen. Click Next to proceed.
Click Install Now on the following screen and then input your Windows 8 CP product key on the next screen.
Click Next to review the license terms, click I Accept, and then click Next.
Signing in to your PC with a Microsoft account gets you access to apps from the Microsoft Store, cloud-based photo and file access, and more.

Step 10
On the Which Type Of Installation Do You Want screen, click Custom (unless you plan to overwrite your current Windows installation). Click the storage partition upon which you plan to install the Windows 8 CP and then click Next to complete the install. It may take 20 minutes or more depending on your hardware specs, but when the installation finishes, you’ll be able to personalize your new Windows 8 system, configure security and updating settings, and link your installation to a Microsoft account.

Now that you have the Windows 8 Consumer Preview installed, it’s time to explore!

What The Future Holds
The procedure for installing the Windows 8 CP is a lot like installing any new operating system. When you’re finished, however, you’ll get a real feel for the direction Microsoft plans to take the personal computer later this year and beyond.
